Mobile communications in the Dominican Republic expanded rapidly in the 2000s as GSM networks from Claro and others spread across the island, replacing many fixed-line connections. 3G services enabled basic mobile internet, followed by 4G LTE deployments in the 2010s that significantly improved speeds in Santo Domingo, Santiago and major tourist destinations. Government and regulatory efforts have focused on improving competition, lowering prices and extending broadband to underserved communities, recognizing connectivity as a driver of economic growth and inclusion. The country's strong tourism sector has also incentivized operators to maintain robust coverage and roaming performance in hotel zones and airports.

The Dominican Republic's mobile market is competitive, with Claro Dominicana, Altice Dominicana and Viva all operating multi-technology networks. 4G LTE is now the primary technology for data in urban areas and along coastal resort regions, supporting high demand from residents, businesses and international visitors. Operators continue to invest in additional spectrum, site densification and fiber backhaul to handle rising data traffic and improve indoor coverage. While 5G has not yet been widely launched, test networks and regulatory planning are laying the groundwork for future upgrades, particularly in dense urban districts and industrial or logistics hubs. In the meantime, continued 4G enhancements will remain central to the country's digital transformation efforts.
