The United States has a rich telecommunications history dating back to the first commercial cellular network launched by Ameritech in Chicago in 1983. The breakup of AT&T's monopoly in 1984 (the Bell System divestiture) fundamentally transformed the industry, introducing competition and innovation. The 1990s saw the transition from analog (1G) to digital (2G) networks, with GSM and CDMA technologies competing for dominance. 3G services launched in the early 2000s, enabling mobile internet access. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auctioned spectrum for 4G LTE services, which began deployment in 2010. Verizon was the first to launch 4G LTE in December 2010, followed by AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The 4G era saw significant consolidation, including AT&T's attempted acquisition of T-Mobile (blocked in 2011) and T-Mobile's eventual merger with Sprint in 2020. 5G deployment began in April 2019 when Verizon launched commercial 5G in select cities, followed by AT&T and T-Mobile. The merger of T-Mobile and Sprint created the largest 5G network by coverage area. Today, all three major operators offer nationwide 5G coverage using a combination of low-band, mid-band, and high-band (mmWave) spectrum, with the US having the largest 5G coverage area globally.

The FCC regulates the industry, ensuring fair competition and managing spectrum allocation.
